Dementia Awareness Week 2017

This Dementia Awareness Week has started off in a very different way for me personally this year with my wonderful Granny who has stayed independent for nearly all of her 96 years going into a care home for her own safety and wellbeing. A lady who never like to bother anyone and is always there to give a helping hand to everyone has found it very difficult to accept that now she needs help herself due to her sight and memory fading.  She has gradually this week settled into life in her new home with the help of some fantastic staff and of course my Mum. I sadly being over 400 miles away have had to only provide telephone support throughout her move into her new home. She has had her hair done and has made some new friends and for my Granny who has always liked to look her best and extremely sociable a really positive thing.

Dementia affects so many people not just those who have been given the diagnosis, care support and understanding is key to helping those living with the disease. This is why I give my time as a volunteer for the Alzheimer's Society as a Dementia Friend and am an active member in our newly formed Uckfield Dementia Forum and the wider Wealden Action Alliance.
This week the Wealden Action Alliance celebrated the first birthday with stalls, speakers and dementia friends session.

Wednesday was a great continuing to raise awareness starting off in the morning at Tesco with Alison from Home Instead and Gemma from the One Trek Minds walking team. Alison and I ran our first double act dementia friends session to staff at Tesco and we shared cake and promoted our dementia awareness day as well as raising money for the Alzheimer's society. Uckfield shoppers were very generous and we had some lovely conversations.

Here are Gemma & I wearing our new trekking t-shirts!
We were also selling hand made crochet Forget-Me-Nots as part of our team One Trek Minds fundraising. There is a team of 8 of us walking 100k in August raising money for Alzheimer's Society and Prostrate Cancer.

In the evening Alison from Home Instead and I joined forces again to do a double act informing the Uckfield Chamber of Commerce about the work of the Uckfield Dementia Forum, Wealden Action Alliance and Dementia Friends. As well as again promoting the Forums information day at the Pavilion with dementia friends sessions.

I look forward to welcoming you at Victoria Pavilion on Saturday.

Hope this Spring edition finds you all well and looking forward to the onset of better weather.  We have enjoyed and celebrated some special days already this year,  Valentine’s, St. David’s Day, Pancakes on Shove Tuesday, Dame Vera Lynn’s 100th Birthday and Comic Relief to name but a few.
You will see from the pictures below our tribute to Vera Lynn.  We were very lucky to have an entertainer “Brian Shaw” who actually sang to Vera during her birthday celebrations.
We also watched a Spring Production by Full Beams entertainers.  This involved a mixture of songs, dancing including ballet, tap dance and some acrobatics.  Which drew gasps from the audience.
We are looking forward to starting some gardening projects and enjoying the sunshine outside.

New Networking Event for Wealden

22/2/2017

Very excited to welcome those working and wishing to work in care to Victoria Pavilion on the 8th March. In all the different focus groups I have attended one overriding element has stood  out, the need to communicate. This event will give us the opportunity for people from various care settings to  network, share their knowledge and services with others and most importantly COMMUNICATE!

I have arranged speakers for the ongoing sessions to give another dimension to events and promote discussion around specific subjects. If any would like to book in to talk in future events please get in touch.

The winding and bumpy road of Dementia

31/1/2017

No one chooses to have dementia in their lives. The road is bumpy but there are special moments of joy where you least expect them. At the day centre we are very privileged to share in those moments. We hear accounts of what it was like to be a child in the war, see music bring forth joyful tears and laughter. Also see a persons pride when they complete some art work of or find the solution to the crossword we have all been struggling with. We hope in enabling these moments of joy we help those living with dementia to have fulfilment in their day whilst giving the people who care for them day and night a well earned break.

When there is a new fork or bump in the road the team are here to help navigate towards the right path for each person. Giving information and referring to other services to provide additional care / support.

The winter months bring lots of changes at the day service. Several service users have moved on to long term care and new service users are coming along to join in the fun.  The team being there to help all in the transition in and out of the service.
